Warning of Economic Impact of Immigration Cap in Australia

Lisa Valentine | Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at 3:39 pm

Many large businesses are experiencing skills shortages.

Skilled workers are still needed in Australia.

Another dire warning about the impact of immigration in Australian upon businesses was voiced today by union leader Paul Howes.

Mr Howes was in Sydney at a conference for the National Industry Skills Council where he called upon any new government to invest in regional centres that would benefit from immigration much more than overcrowded cities.

And he accused both the Liberals and Labour of using immigration as a scapegoat for the congestion problems in cities such as Melbourne and Sydney. The real cause of congestion, he said, was inadequate infrastructure which is a government responsibility. He implied that the government used immigration and asylum seekers to cover up their own inadequacies in these areas.

Capping immigration in Australia would result in chaos within both the mining and construction industries, new projects would be shelved and the mining boom shortlived. In fact he argued that Australia needs more, not less migrants: “No one in this election campaign has been able to mount any economic case that makes any sense whatsoever on why Australia needs a cap on migration. Why Australia needs less migrants, rather than more.”

Mr Howes is just one of many concerned businessmen in Australia who have questioned Ms Gillard’s and Mr Abbott’s stance on immigration. With many large businesses still experiencing skills shortages and new investors looking towards Australia, many feel that the government are using the immigration debate to win media support and inevitably, the election.

So far immigration hasn’t come up as a major policy that the independents want to negotiate on so whether or not the business community’s pleas will have any effect is not yet known. Meanwhile potential migrants to Australia hold their breath to wait and see what changes to immigration policy a new government will make.

i appreciate to the independent candidates ideas. It is most precious thing relating to the migration policy but labor government specially immigration minister chris evans had a victim of migration policy because ‘Capped & Ceased’ policy is a controversial and unreliable issue. It would harass and hurt the feelings of all the applicants from overseas. All applicants from entire world are strongly opposes this policy. All applications pre-September 2007 have been cancelled based on cap and ceased provision. No where strong reason of disapproval or objection has been mentioned. It is a betrayal and election agenda. The minister was critical in the hysterical and inflammatory reception of cap and ceased policy.
“to be hanged till death” policy

They should also immediately tackle applications that are pending to be processed for 3-4 years already. Either they return the money with interest or process them according to the agreed terms at the time of the application.
I would like to make a request to eliminate this habit of changing rules without any sound reasons. No doubt you better know what should be the criteria since being responsible I decided to thwart all of these illegal acts. You also know that migration rules change regularly, but once you apply you are generally protected from all future changes to the rules. So, I hope that the new Australian Government will think on our aspects and keep in mind with moderation and compassionately and also will find impartial solution so it will put a precious contribution in the Australian economy and make stout relations with the entire world.

I think the parties are using Australian Immigration Sector for there political gains, as it has become a hot topic that is gaining a lot of attention of everybody these days and people are more and more diverted towards what will happen or what is going on in Immigration. Whatever the policies be chosen by either of the parties, but, One thing is sure, Australia is suffering and will suffer a lot. It has not only effected the Australian economy, but, also is criticized by many of big companies and Australian International Education Sector and not to mention the Migrants who are suffering a lot who were not told about the changes that could be made at the time they lodged there applications and are now left nowhere by Australian Immigration Policy Makers.

It seems that Immigration is being used more as a tool than seriously. I think everybody should simply leave the Australian Immigration to the Authorities who know better (such as companys who know what and who they need as migrants, the International Education Sector and of course the Migration Institute of Australia). These are the Authorities who will better manage the Australian Immigration Department than the Abbots or Julia or Evan or Labours etc etc anybody who is very much interested in playing with the lives of people.

The continuously changing policies have badly effected the majority of migrants and not to mention the economy of Australia than uplifting the economy as promised by Policy makers.

At last I would like to mention that whatever has happened in Australian Immigration Sector and the policies and changes that were introduced in Immigration by the government, has not only effected the current migration program but it will leave the effect for a long time till the people would be made aware and promised of no future policy changes after they lodge the
