Victoria 101: Top experiences in Victoria as voted by the public

Leaonne Hall | Sunday, January 4th, 2009 at 12:08 pm

After more than 72,000 votes, the results of Victoria 101 have been announced – here are the five best experiences in the state of Victoria as voted by the public:

  • Drive the Great Ocean Road: Home to the Twelve Apostle rock formations, the Great Ocean Road is one of the world’s most unforgettable road trips. This stunning road, west of Melbourne, winds alongside the Southern Ocean affording breathtaking vistas of the coastline.
  • Take part at the Audax Alpine Classic: An annual cycling event where riders challenge themselves over a choice of distances, Audax Alpine Classic travels through some of Victoria’s most spectacular countryside, including several testing climbs and breathtaking descents.
  • Visit the Ford Discovery Centre: Located on Geelong Waterfont, the Ford Discovery Centre is more than a car museum, providing an opportunity to see behind the scenes and have a fascinating look at automotive technology with an ever-changing collection of cars and exhibits.
  • Explore Wilsons Promontory: The southernmost point of the Australian mainland, Wilsons Promontory (affectionately known as ‘the Prom’) is probably Australians’ best-loved national park, with a 80-mile coastline framed by granite headlands, mountains, forests and fern gullies.
  • Experience Walhalla: Once a busy gold mining centre and one of Australia’s richest towns, Walhalla lives on today as a remote and picturesque mountain village hidden in a deep valley of the Victorian Alps. Current population: 8!

Other tourism experiences in the top 20 include the Grampians National Park (a rugged ancient landscape renowned for its breathtaking rocky views, rich Aboriginal culture, European heritage and stunning spring wildflower displays), Daylesford’s Chocolate Mill (priding itself on being ‘for the Serious Chocoholic’, it makes fresh chocolate the old-fashioned European way, melting down over a tonne of chocolate per month imported from Belgium), Phillip Island’s Penguin Parade (every evening at dusk, thousands of Little Penguins –the smallest in the world- come ashore at the world’s famous Penguin Parade on Phillip Island) and Puffing Billy (Australia’s oldest surviving steam railway, it still runs on its 15-mile original track through a beautiful scenery of forests and fern gullies).
