Australia in the Springtime for US President Obama.
Barack Obama, President of the US, is due to visit Australia in March as part of his Indonesia and Pacific Island trip. It will be his first official visit to Australia.
The visit will coincide with the 70th anniversary of the US-Australia alliance. The Alliance, known as the ANZUS Treaty was originally concluded in 1951 but was invoked by Australia in response to the terror attacks on New York in 2001.
The alliance is a co-operation between the two nations on defence and security, allowing Australia access to the US’s intelligence strategies and defence tactics.
It is thought that Mr Obama was invited to spend time in Australia when he met with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in Washington last year.
The visit to Australia by Mr Obama will reinforce the alliance and give the US President opportunity to discuss with Kevin Rudd issues on security, the global economic recovery, climate change and Afghanistan.
The US Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told Washington media: “This trip is an important part of the President’s continued effort to broaden and strengthen the partnerships that are necessary to advance our security and prosperity,”
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s office responded with a statement officially welcoming the US President: “Australia’s relationship with the United States of America is our most important international relationship. We are allies, we are trading partners and we co-operate on the international challenges confronting all nations.”
Whilst Mr Obama will need an Australian visa to enter the country, it is unlikely he’ll run into much trouble obtaining one.
