London was popular for Australian workers.
The UK is going to launch new measures to restrict the numbers of overseas workers from places such as Australia from entering the UK.
As we reported earlier in the month, an increasing number of Australian workers are leaving Australia to emigrate to the UK in search of work. Which seems an irony given that so many are leaving their own countries to emigrate to Australia. In fact Australia is the number one country of choice for Brits wanting to migrate abroad.
Many agencies were catering for the rise in numbers of Australian workers migrating to Britain, with many of these agencies advertising in Australian newspapers and on Australian websites.
But with the UK facing a peak in unemployment this year, restrictions are being placed on the number of migrants granted visas for the UK. As the UK cannot restrict immigration from the European Union, these cuts will have to come from other countries such as Australia and the US.
The Director of the Royal Commonwealth Society told an Australian network: “There will be young Australians who will listen to this news story and say ‘I could take my skills anywhere in the world, I’m looking for a bit of an adventure, but I’m hearing some bad things about the UK, so I might go and work in the US or Canada or wherever else it is’.”
However with new Australian PM Julia Gillard threatening tougher sanctions on immigration levels in Australia there really isn’t much Australian can complain about. Australians make up a minority of immigrants living in the UK so it’s uncertain how much of an impact the restrictions will have on immigration in the UK as a whole. It appears to be just an exercise in appeasing public concerns.
