Adventurer Fogle to travel around Australia.
TV presenter Ben Fogle is to follow in the footsteps of ill-fated adventurers Burke and Wills this year by travelling around Australia.
Teaming up with partner James Cracknell, the British rowing champion and double Olympic gold medallist, Fogle will be trekking across Australia for 2,500 miles to trace the steps that Robert O’Hara Burke and William John Wills took back in 1860.
The original expedition saw Burke, Wills and 19 men crossing Australia from Melbourne with the intention of mapping the country. At that time the vast majority of Australia had not yet been explored. Unfortunately their travels across Australia were to be their last and only one man returned alive from the expedition.
However their entire travels were not in vain as, by a cruel twist of irony, the search parties sent out to rescue the men were able to gauge a greater understanding between them, of the inland layout of Australia.
Meanwhile Fogle is excited about his travel plans to Australia saying: “It’s not just desert, it’s open bush – you’ve got rainforests, you’ve got mountains, you’ve got swamps, absolutely everything. We’re very much going to be organising the whole expedition from scratch this time.”
Fogle is no stranger to adventure, having started his career on the reality TV show Castaway in which his survival skills were put to use on the Scottish island of Taransay for a year. Since then he’s also presented and starred in Wild on the West Coast and Wild in Africa. So he should be up for the challenge – although Australia has a diversity of all its own and he’ll be facing many challenges and survival tasks along the way. We’re sure however that both Fogle and Cracknell will do rather better than Burke and Wills!
He will be following in the footsteps of many backpackers who choose Australia as their favourite place to travel to and explore. If you’d like to go off on such an adventure and travel Australia then we have all the best places to go to and tips on how to get hold of that Australian visa.
