Getting Around

You may already be aware that Australia is not a small place to visit. It’s big. Very big; just a shade smaller than mainland USA at 7.69 million square kilometres and the world’s sixth largest country, covering 5% of the world’s surface. The modestly sized state of Victoria is just a tad smaller than the entire UK, and Western Australia alone could accommodate 10 Great Britains, with plenty of change to spare.

Getting around Australia therefore usually requires a bit of planning, especially if you only have a limited time Down Under. The distance between Cairns and Sydney for example is 2,911km, which can take between 2 hours 40 minutes to cover, and over 44 hours, depending on the mode of transport you choose. Check out the distances for popular travel routes, and find out the distances between the biggest cities, together with rough driving times (given in km/hours).

So many choices… a rough travel plan can make getting around easier

So many choices… a rough travel plan can make getting around easier

As well as time, there’s the actual journey to consider. Do you want to get from Adelaide to Brisbane as quickly as possible, perhaps taking in a bird’s eye view from a plane along the way? Or would you rather get there at your own pace and experience Australia’s campervans? Or maybe catch a bus and meet other travellers, while taking advantage of your bus driver’s local knowledge to find the best places to stop off? Plus there’s the ever important question of finance: what can you afford? Take a look at these options for travelling around Australia and find what’s best for you.
