Hobart
Founded in 1803, Hobart is one of Australia’s oldest cities. Located in the south-east corner of the island of Tasmania, Hobart is set in the estuary of the Derwent River, against the backdrop of Mount Wellington. The capital of Tasmania, Hobart is one of the country’s smallest centres, but also one of its most picturesque. Set around the harbour, Hobart is an eclectic mix of historic buildings dating back to its colonial past, and modern 21st-century living, with a wealth of European influences clearly seen in the architecture – think colonial mansions and settler’s cottages. Delightfully uncrowded, Hobart is a culture lovers dream, with galleries, art studios and restaurants now standing in the once industrial waterfront warehouses. The bustling arts and crafts scene can be best enjoyed at the Salamanca Arts centre, while the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery will offer more insight into the city’s history.
