New liquor restrictions in the State’s North West will improve visitors’ experiences and the region’s reputation, according to Tourism Western Australia.

Kate Lamont, Tourism WA Chairman said alcohol sale restrictions would have minimal impact on tourism and could be easily managed by the industry.

“The Director of Liquor Licensing has announced limits on alcohol sales north of the 20th parallel, essentially a region-wide restriction for the Kimberley,” Ms Lamont said.

“The Tourism WA board fully supports the Director’s new conditions and agree that imposing these conditions is an appropriate step given the harm caused by alcohol consumption in our State’s North West.

“There are so many social and health advantages that these restrictions can offer, including minimising disruptive behaviour which can seriously impact our visitors’ experience.

“Our local tourism industry is set to benefit from reducing anti-social behaviour and improving the reputation of the region.

“Tourism WA will provide advice on how the Director of Liquor Licensing can work with the tourism industry to let visitors and operators know about the restrictions.

“Some strategies to communicate the changes may include information available online and brochures in visitor centres, hotels and tourist outlets.”

Tourism is a key economic driver generating 80,000 jobs and injecting just over $7billion into the Western Australian economy, of which over $2 billion is spent in the regions.
