Purnululu also known as Bungle Bungle in the Kimberley region.
Tourism Australia is going all environmental in their latest international tourism marketing strategy and have announced that the region of Kimberley will take centre stage.
Kimberley, in Western Australia, is home to some of Australia’s most fantastic landscapes that are dominated by raging waterfalls, isolated beaches, rugged mountains and ancient gorges. It is of particular importance to local communities who highlight iconic destinations in their region.
Tourists flock to the Kimberley region each year to visit such spectacular locations as the Bungle Bungle, (an impressive range of striped sandstone domes) the Gibb River Road, Lake Argyle, Cable Beach, Horizontal Falls and Cape Levegue. It also has a rich indigenous history and is the home of some of Australia’s most prestigious Indigenous artists such as Paddy Bedford and Freddy Timms.
Tourism Australia’s National Landscapes Program aims to promote such significant landscapes for their natural and cultural heritage, making tourists aware of what such regions have to offer.
The Minister for Tourism Martin Ferguson AM MP extolled the virtues of the Kimberley region: “The Kimberley is a stunning part of Australia, internationally renowned for its vibrant Indigenous culture and unique environment and of course, the world famous Cable Beach.”
“The inclusion of the Kimberley in the National Landscapes Program recognises the extraordinary environmental importance of the Kimberly, from the beauty and incredible diversity of the marine environment to the ecological diversity of this huge north-western landscape.”
The National Landscapes Program also offers training for Indigenous people and creates local jobs within the community. It is hoped that such programs will encourage communities to work together to increase tourism to the area.
