A bronze whaler shark like this one may have been responsible for the latest shark attack.
If it’s not kangaroos giving Australians a major headache, it’s sharks. Swimmers off the coast near Adelaide have been warned about possible shark attacks today.
The warning comes after a 24 year old man sustained bite injuries from a shark when he was spear-fishing with friends at Second Valley, south of Adelaide.
The man was bitten on the arm and leg but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. He was treated at a local hospital before being taken to Adelaide for surgery.
The type of shark was unknown, but the bite victim and other witnesses say that is was around two metres long. A school of bronze whaler, or grey reef sharks have since been spotted in the area and have been chased away by surf lifesavers to deeper waters.
Local resident Devon Batt says that shark sightings have increased recently: “There has been [sightings] over the last three to four weeks and there has been a very large school of salmon sighted.” It is thought that the sharks would be attracted to the area by the salmon.
Sharks become a problem when they venture into shallower waters to catch prey and although they don’t usually have human on the menu, they can inflict serious injuries if someone happens to get in the way of their feeding.
The bite victim was no doubt thankful that for the shark at least, he was the one that got away!
