Strong Australian Growth Could Fuel Demand for Migrants

Skilled workers are need to boost the economy.

Skilled workers are need to boost the economy.

Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that the growth domestic product in Australian grew more rapidly this quarter than expected. In the 3 months to June 2010 GDP experienced a 1.2% growth and 3.3% for the full year to June 2010.

The results also reveal that within the construction, mining, professional and technical industries, production has also increased in the same quarter. This rise in production only serves to confirm Australia’s strong position in the market and its fast route to recovery after the downturn of the global recession.

It also means that one of the greatest challenges facing any new government now is filling skilled workplace shortages. Business leaders have been calling on the government to make immigration policy more flexible in order to allow for skilled migrants to enter Australia and fill the labour shortfalls.

More growth only puts pressure on Australia to keep supplying and for that Australian businesses need the skilled workers to keep up with demand. China is a huge customer and one of the biggest importers of Australian goods, as China keeps growing so does the demand for Australian minerals.

A skilled worker shortage in Australia would be a disaster for major businesses and a severe blow for the economy. If a cap were put on migration then this is exactly what would happen.

The Sydney Morning Herald today called the Coalition’s plans for a migration cap “silly” and said that obtaining skilled workers was central to the Australian economic recovery.

Continued growth in Australia can only spell good news for the thousands of potential migrants awaiting news on immigration policy in Australia. The higher the demand for skilled workers the more likely it is that the government will ease the route to migration. And not a moment too soon for the hopeful applicants.
