Australia wants you! If you're a young professional.
Australia’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship announced yesterday that the department was conducting a review of Australia’s migration needs and may look into initialising a plan that would see a 50 year intake of up to 230,000 immigrants to Australia each year.
The Secretary of the Australian Immigration Department, Andrew Metcalfe, stated that the department was looking to steer clear of year based decisions in favour of a more long-term plan for migration.
He added that a migration program which is well planned, could assist in Australia’s long term plans for the economy and demography as well as environmental goals.
He went on to state that the priority migrants would be young, fit and highly educated individuals with working skills that would benefit Australia’s economy and labour force.
The review will also look at the skilled occupations list and in particular, the critical skills list that was introduced in December of last year. The critical skills list has already been earmarked by the Immigration Department for evaluation that may result in it being phased out.
The points system used to select skilled immigrants, often known as the Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL) is also set to change, as Mr Metcalfe stated: “The MODL is not as flexible as we would like to address a rapidly changing and uncertain global environment. In my view, one of the themes of this century will be the increased mobility of people around the globe, and we need to manage this adroitly.
So long as those people are skilled professionals and not refugees fleeing from war-torn countries then Mr Metcalfe?
