Santa breezes back to shore after the dramatic rescue.

Santa was hailed a hero yesterday after saving two swimmers from a watery grave in on Torquay beach near Geelong, Victoria.

Santa was making a surprise visit to the surf club’s Christmas party with his boat full of lollies for the kids, when an urgent rescue call came through to assist two swimmers who had got into difficulty.

Santa didn’t hesitate and instead of making his grand entrance to the surf club, amazed members saw him race out from behind Cosy Corner and dash to the rescue instead.

Two swimmers at Point Danger had got into serious difficulties. One, a teenage boy, had lost his boogie board and was being swept further from the shore, whilst the older man in his 20’s was becoming exhausted and in danger of being pulled underwater despite the efforts of two surfers who had swum over to help.

Santa with his two patrol members were soon on the scene and managed to pull the swimmers aboard. Rob McAllister is the club patrol captain who was one of those on board, he said later; “They were in huge trouble, the two board-riders were really struggling with the whole situation.”

As the boat was already weighted down with Santa, his two helpers and bags full of lollies, the additional weight was a concern for those on board: “We were a bit concerned how it would cope, there were a few sets coming through and there was a fair bit of weight in it.” McAllister stated. But luckily for both rescuers and rescued the boat managed to get everyone safely back on shore, to a rapturous applause from the crowd.

McAllister later said that if the club had not had it’s Christmas party then, and had the crowd not been standing outside waiting for Santa, the pair of swimmers may not have been spotted and the outcome could have been very different.

And just who was behind the Santa disguise? 15 year old Iggy Rudd, who was later given a hero’s reception and made an honorary member of the surf club!

We always knew Santa was a true hero!
