Ross Noble in Love With Australia

Ross Noble is a self confessed Aussiephile.

Ross Noble, the Northumberland born comic, has been speaking to the Daily Telegraph of his new television series and why he loves Australia!

Noble married an Australian and immigrated to Australia from Britain in 2004. The couple bought a farmhouse near Melbourne and had a baby daughter, Elfie. Unfortunately, whilst Noble was on tour, his wife and daughter had to abandon the house during the bushfires in February of this year, taking with them no more than the clothes they stood up in. The house was burnt to the ground and all their possessions destroyed. However this experience has not dampened the comic’s love for Australia.

He says he loves the Australian peoples laid back nature and optimism. And he applauds Australia for not having the binge-drinking culture of Britain. “They may be getting p***ed in the garden while cooking up sausages but they’re not all pouring into city centres, stabbing each other and smashing each other’s heads into bins. Quite.

Unsurprisingly, Ross Noble has no plans to return to the UK. He bought what he describes as a stop-gap house that neither he nor his wife likes much. He admits that he spent more time choosing a magazine than he did their temporary abode. But he plans to make a more permanent move as soon as he can.

His love of Australia is reflected in his new series in the UK on Five titled ‘Ross Noble’s Australian Trip’ in which he mixes snippets of his gigs with a travelogue of the country. Didn’t Billy Connolly do something similar? Although Noble reckons that this travelogue will be different as he takes the viewer on an altogether more different tour of Australia.

Noble spent five months filming for the series, travelling 16,000 miles around Oz on his motorbike. Starting in Brisbane the trip took the comic around to Broken Hill, down to Victoria, back up to Newcastle and then across to Adelaide. “Australia is just so big, people don’t realise” he said. He also admits to a few near misses whilst travelling on his bike, with the usual Aussie hazards of kangaroos, emus and cows.

You can catch Ross Noble’s Australian Trip from Monday at 10pm on Five.
