Refugee week in Australia brings communities together.
Australia holds its annual Refugee Week this coming Sunday 20th June and the Australian Immigration Dept have given it their full backing.
Australian Refugee Week aims to dispel many of the myths surrounding refugees and to inform and educate people of the struggle that refugees go through to escape their poverty-stricken homes for a new life in Australia.
Their aim is to also to celebrate the many achievements of refugees and the positive contributions they make to Australian society and to the rest of the world.
Events during the week explore how individuals and groups can help by getting involved and how communities can provide a safe and welcoming environment for refugees. It is also a time for reflection on how refugees are treated and what could be done to make the situation better.
Themes and stories are explored through dance, music, theatre and film in which everyone can get involved and be a part of the event. One major coup for refugees was the successful bidding for a surfing lesson and breakfast with Tony Abbott, leader of the opposition, by GetUp, a leading refugee campaign group. They hope to use the event to highlight the many trials and stigma that are faced by refugees.
Events will be happening all over Australia including a candlelight walk and lantern parade in Queensland on Friday; the refugee film festival in Sydney on Saturday; the No Worries Festival in Victoria where football intermingles with music, face painting and a fire brigade visit and a refugee Variety Concert on Christmas Island where current detainees will be performing and showcasing their talent.
So lend your support and you might just take away a different perspective on refugees. Visit the refugee council website for more details and a list of events happening throughout the week.
