Ms Hanson during her trial for fraud.
A controversial Australian politician who campaigned against Australian immigration is apparently quitting the country to immigrate to the UK.
Pauline Hanson, whose father emigrated to Australia from the UK in 1908, was a Liberal Party candidate before being disowned by them when she made anti-Aboriginal comments prior to the 1996 Federal Election.
In a speech to the House of Representatives, Hanson claimed that Australian Aborigines received more benefits than non-Aboriginals and that ordinary Australians were being subjected to a type of “reverse racism”. She also controversially attacked immigration in Australia and called for multiculturalism to be abolished, saying: “I believe we are in danger of being swamped by Asians.” She went on to say: “Of course, I will be called racist but, if I can invite whom I want into my home, then I should have the right to have a say in who comes into my country.”
She eventually lost her seat in Parliament in 1998 and in 2003 was convicted and briefly jailed for fraud. In 2007 she ran for a national Senate seat, criticising Islam and campaigning for an end to immigration by Muslims in order to protect what she called “Australian culture”.
Now she has told an Australian magazine ‘Women’s Day’ that she is leaving Australia for good. “I’ve really had enough. I want peace in my life. I want contentment, and that’s what I’m aiming for.” She continued to say that she would never be allowed to re-enter Parliament and that she wanted a fresh start whilst she still had her health.
Because her father was a British citizen, it means that Ms Hanson is free to emigrate to the UK without the usual immigration regulations applying. Lucky for Ms Hanson then.
