Prince William ready to go down under.
Prince William is set to make his first visit to Australia since 1983 when he was aged just one year old.
The Prince responded to an invitation extended by the Australian government for him to visit the country and get to know the people of Australia. It will be an extension of his visit to New Zealand where he is due to open the new Supreme Court.
Prince William will take on a whistle-stop tour in the Australian summer from January 19-21. He’ll spend those three days in Melbourne and Sydney, visiting the areas of Victoria that were ravaged by the bushfires in 2008 as well as dropping in on Australia’s servicemen and women.
It’s also reported that Prince William is keen to learn more about local indigenous issues and people and perhaps, following in his fathers footsteps, he’ll be meeting various young people involved in sustainable developmental projects.
Prince Williams visit to New Zealand will be his first official overseas visit, he will be touring Australia in an unofficial capacity.
Some people will no doubt look upon the invitation by the Rudd Government and the Prince’s acceptance of it, as a sign that Prime Minister Rudd is keen to strengthen the bond between Australia and the UK.
Australia is still a constitutional monarchy, with the Queen as its head, but Rudd is an avowed republican. However Rudd has said in the past that cutting ties with Britain’s monarchy is not a priority.
