A special wine tasting is being held in London on April 16 featuring small, inimitable wineries from Australia.

While the 1990′s saw a fabulous flow of good quaffing and reliable – or at least reliably souped-up – alpha wine from Australia pouring in to the UK, the greater part of this decade has seen the UK a little bored with Australia’s ‘constructed’ brands as they seek out a sense of place and soul once again.

Australian wine has some very well-known “quaffing” brands, but it has also always had some exceptional producers at the highest level, pursuing their own paths in ways more akin to the finest vignerons of Europe, producing wines that reflect the antipodes with honesty and great natural charm.

Leading the charge are the superb wines of Bass Phillip who have been long recognised around the world.

The wines come from a variety of terroir across southern Australia. Bass Phillip is from Gippsland, in the east of Victoria; Hurley and Wildcroft from Mornington Peninsula Castagna and Golden Ball from Beechworth from central Victoria, Craiglee from Sunbury, and Clos Clare from the Clare Valley in South Australia.

The tasting will be held at in the Downer Room of Australia House on 16 April from 2-5pm.
