Paul Keating
He’s the man who found world fame by fondling the Queen. Now former Australian PM Paul Keating is being touted the face of a new campaign to lure Brits to Australia. As if we needed any persuasion!
The 64-year old republican, of perhaps dubious aesthetic appeal, is following in the illustrious footsteps of the likes of Kylie Minogue, Cate Blanchett and Mel Gibson, who all led similar campaigns in America. Kylie, along with fellow Brit-dwelling Aussies Jason (Donovan), Elle McPherson and cricketer Shane Warne, are also in the running to front the campaign.
The ‘G’Day UK’ initiative is in the hands of ad agency M&C Satchi London. The addition of the former PM (1991-1996) to the shortlist has caused both mirth and controversy back in Australia. One blogger quipped that ‘If Keating was to stay in the UK, all the Brits would want to run to Oz’. Keating is however being supported by the Australia Day foundation, who reckon he’s got the acumen and gravitas to promote Australia to migrants.
The purpose of the campaign, rather than luring UK migrants per se, is to develop trade relationships as well as promoting migration and tourism – the whole package of Australia.
The face of the G’Day UK campaign has not yet been chosen, but the odds are apparently stacked more in Kylie’s favour than in Keating’s.
