Living in Australia can become a reality still.
With all the changes made by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship you may think that getting an Australian visa is impossible.
However if you are emigrating to Australia from the UK, you still have a considerably good chance of obtaining your dream to live in Australia.
If you are considering a move to Australia then the first thing you need to do is find out if your occupation is on the new Skilled Occupations List. This gives you a higher chance of having your visa application processed as a priority as these are the skills that are highly sought after in Australia.
Alternatively you could contact some Australian employers directly with your details and enquire as to whether they would consider nominating your application. Have a look at the Employer Nomination Scheme Occupation List that contains some occupations that are not included on the SOL. If your occupation is one of these then you could start contacting Australian employers now.
The Australian visa process operations on a points basis. The pass mark is 120 points which are granted through various factors such as your occupation, health, language skills etc. If you aren’t able to achieve the full 120 points then don’t worry, because you could apply for state sponsorship. You will still need to meet all basic requirements and pass a skills assessment before making your application to the state you wish to live in. Most Australian states have their own state migration plans, so it’s worth doing your research first. For instance if you have mining experience you will find more mining related occupations in Western Australia than in the Northern Territory. Be aware however, that if you are accepted for state sponsorship this does not mean that you will be granted a visa. It merely means that the state you have applied to are happy to sponsor your application, thereby giving you some much needed extra points. The final decision still rests with the DIAC.
There are still plenty of skills shortages in Australia, so if your dream is to live where the sun always shines, don’t put it off, have a look to see if you could be eligible for a visa.
