Only MARA registered agents can provide you with migration advice
The new Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA) has officially started work as the regulator of the Australian migration advice profession.
MARA will regulate the activities of the Australia migration agencies to ensure that consumers are being given the right advice.
The body provides a list of registered migration agents, as in Australia, only registered migration agents can provide immigration assistance to those who want to enter or stay in Australia.
Potential migrants should only deal with MARA registered agents.
The new office replaces the previous body which was introduced in 1998, known as the Migration Institute of Australia (MIA).
The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, announced back in February that the new regulator would be established.
“It is important that the community has confidence in the professionalism and integrity of migration agents. The new Office of the MARA will provide that confidence and remove concerns about potential conflicts of interest,” explained Senator Evans.
“I’m pleased the transition to the current arrangements has been smooth and well received by industry, community and consumers.”
MARA will be led by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) senior executive Christine Sykes.
It will also be supported by an advisory board, which will include a representative of the MIA, the Law Council of Australia (LCA), the community and a consumer advocate.
