Missing Muffy Returns After 9 Years

Lisa Valentine | Monday, August 3rd, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Here’s a heartwarming story to stave off those Monday blues!  Get yourself a nice cuppa and prepare to go ‘Ahhh’ at this tale of love, loss and rediscovery.

Muffy recovers from her adventures

Muffy recovers from her adventures

Muffy’s story begins at an RSPCA shelter in Brisbane.  She was a curly-haired little mutt, her breed most likely to be a melting-pot of all the local dogs in the area, but for the Lampard family, looking for a pet for 4 year old Chloe, she was adorable.  So they adopted her and took her home, but not before embracing the very latest technology of microchipping, a move that was later to prove very wise indeed.

Chloe and her pet Muffy spent 4 years of bliss together.  I’m imagining a girl running through a field of wheat, her dogged companion behind her, you know the kind of thing I mean!

But one day, disaster struck!  Muffy disappeared from their backyard.  They launched a huge doghunt for her, searched every nook and cranny, there wasn’t a tree in the neighbourhood that didn’t have a missing poster on it.  But the months became years and with no word of missing Muffy, the Lampard’s gave up the hunt.  But little Chloe never forgot her best friend.

Fast forward 9 years and RSPCA Inspectors are investigating a case of cruelty in a Melbourne house.  They come across a dirty little bundle of curls sleeping in the backyard on a piece of cardboard.  They take her into custody and discover, to their surprise, that she’s microchipped.

Cut now to the Lampard family home and Mrs Lampard receives the news she had long given up hope of ever hearing.  Muffy had been found!  “When the RSPCA described her, I told them her name, I knew immediately it was our Muffy,” Mrs Lampard stated.  “It was completely out of the blue – after nine years, I thought she was long gone.”

Just how she managed to turn up 1,200 miles from home will remain a mystery, the owners of the house Muffy was taken from claim to have found Muffy wandering the streets just a year ago.  So the real story of Muffy may remain forever in a movie producer’s imagination, but for now the Littlest Hobo is safe and well, back in the arms of a delighted Chloe.

Of course Chloe is now grown-up, 17 years old!  But the bond between girl and dog has remained strong and when young Chloe received the news that her beloved Muffy had been found, she was reportedly ‘over the moon’!

Muffy will need a lot of TLC after her adventures.  An allergic reaction to the many flea bites she suffered means that she has a severe skin condition which results in the loss of those adorable curls.  Not that this matters to the Lampards: “I don’t mind at all, we’re happy to look after her, we’re just happy to have her come home.â€?

Well at least this shaggy dog story has a happy ending!  Why not share some of your pet stories with us too?
