Healthcare
The Australian healthcare system is of a high standard/ Known as Medicare it is free to those who are living permanently in Australia, but if you are not then you will have to pay for your healthcare. However, there is a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement in place between Australia and the following countries:
- New Zealand
- The United Kingdom
- The Republic of Ireland
- Sweden
- The Netherlands
- Finland
- Italy
- Malta
- Norway
This entitles you to help covering the costs of any treatment you may need while staying in Australia. Visit Medicare Australia for more information on enrolling.
Be aware that even with full Medicare privileges, dental treatment is not covered, and so you will need to find your own dentist. Talk to local people about this, as they will probably be able to point you in the right direction. Alternatively, try the local yellow pages.
Private healthcare is available in Australia, and there are a number of different options open to you, and a range of different prices. The government run health website offers information on healthcare across the country and is a good place to look to find out more about private healthcare.
