How To Find A Job

When it comes to securing work in Australia, be prepared for a fiercely competitive marketplace, especially in the larger cities, as the jobs market in Australia is generally more constricted than in the UK, although don’t be put off by this. If you have a specific skill there will certainly be high demand for your talents. Have a look at our Australian visa section to find out about skilled worker visas.

In terms of how to go about finding a job, the first step is to do some serious research. The key thing is to find out if your skills are in demand in Australia if they aren’t then you may find it very hard to secure a visa. There are a number of websites out there that can help you with you’re search, for example Next Step Australia and the government website workplace.gov.au.

One other option is to enter Australia on a temporary visa, and arrange for a number of job interviews while in the country. This can be a risky option, unless you have done some serious research beforehand, and are aware of the kind of job availability that is open to you.

Further considerations include the transference of your UK skills to Australia. For example if you work in accounting or finance circles, you need to ensure that you have a good knowledge of how the Australian system works before applying for an interview. It may well be worth looking into a conversion course, if relevant, to ensure that your skills and knowledge is fully transferable to Australia, to allow you to secure a job.

The other issue to be aware of is that you may need to enter Australia on a lower salary or lower down the ladder in order to secure your first job. Remember, your experience in the UK will be different to the working environment in Australia, and so in order to get a foot in the door you may need to find a lower ranking job for the first year or so.

There are many websites where you can upload your CV and be alerted to jobs available in Australia, these can be really handy when it comes to seeing what’s available, and also what kind of salary you will be looking at. Useful websites include:

There are also Aussie job fairs that can be attended, allowing you to meet employers and ask any questions you may have.
