Australian star Heath Ledger died nearly a year ago, yet his legacy is set to live on. Ledger has been posthumously presented one of the Hollywood Press Association’s Golden Globe Awards for his maniacal portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight. Pundits also believe he is the favourite to scoop an Oscar in February.
If he did win both awards for his performance, he would be following in the footsteps of Australian raised Peter Finch, who died before being able to claim the gongs for his role in Sidney Lumet’s Network (1977).
Ledger was previously nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his portrayal of a repressed gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain. When he died, he was working on Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus. In memory of Ledger’s life, Gilliam rewrote his part and had retained scenes already shot by Ledger, while using four different actors to complete the film.
