Cycling fans brace yourselves, for the legend that is Lance Armstrong is set to return to South Australia for the second time, to compete in the Santos Tour Down Under with his new team ‘Team Radio Shack’.

For Armstrong, the seven-time Tour De France champion, it will be his second visit to South Australia but it will be the first time that he and his new team have competed anywhere in the world.

Lance made his debut in Southern Australia for the Santos Tour Down Under back in 2009 and nearly three quarters of a million people took to the streets to watch their cycling idol. Next year’s event is set to draw a even bigger crowd.

The tour will take place from the 17 – 24 January 2010 in Adelaide and will kick off the annual Pro Tour calendar which attracts the best teams and riders from all over the world.

Neil Saunders from the South Australian Tourism Commission enthused: “There is no doubt that Santos Tour Down Under is a fantastic event, and with Lance and his new team, along with the newly formed British-based TEAM SKY potentially competing, this is one event not to be missed.

The race itself sees cyclists riding over 800kms of South Australia, through the heart of Adelaide and its surrounds, the undulating terrain of the Adelaide hills, past the Fleurieu Peninsula and into the famed wine-making district of Barossa.

Visitors to the tour will be given the unique opportunity to cycle parts of the race themselves, as well as meet some of their cycling heroes.

If you fancy going along to watch Lance and his team in action, Sports Tours International are offering a 7 night package from £1,479 per person. Unfortunately this doesn’t include flights, but you can check out our flights section for the best flight deals to Australia.
