Kangaroos Swarm Over Australian Outback Town

Cute, but not really what you want to see in your backyard!

Cute, but not really what you want to see in your backyard!

It could be a scene from an Alfred Hitchcock horror film, perhaps The Invasion of the Killer Kangaroos! Well video footage of a small town in Queensland, Australia certainly makes for eerie viewing.

Residents of the small town of Tharmomindah in Queensland have been subject to a biblical invasion of kangaroos and emus over the past few days and it’s causing quite a stir in this small outback community.

The small town normally has a population of just 203 but as night falls, that swells as hundreds of kangaroos descend on the town, trampling through gardens and eating crops. Estimates put the figures at one Roo for every five people in town.

Local farmer Scott Fraser plays the numbers down: ”It’s possible to shoot seven hundred a night, they’re that thick. They’re swarm proportions, you have no idea, it gives you a creepy feeling when you see them that thick.”

No doubt animal rights organisations will be hoping that no-one is tempted to go out to try and shoot that many kangaroos!

And it’s not just roos – emus are also closing in on the small town causing consternation among the small population.

There are lots of theories about why the kangaroos are swarming over Tharmomindah, with some people blaming the drought as the area suffers it’s driest period for over 50 years. Others however point to a reduction in kangaroo meat being shipped out to Russia over contamination fears, they say that kangaroos are no longer being hunted as it’s harder to export the meat.

Others blame a food shortage brought on by the drought, with roos being forced to scavenge in towns and villages.

Some residents are returning home to find around five of the beasts feasting on their lawns and are too afraid to get our of their cars. Local police are trying to control the roos, who can become extremely aggressive when threatened….or when extremely hungry or thirsty.
