Island Caretaker starts his job Down Under

Ben and his girlfriend Bre arrived on Hamilton Island to begin their time here yesterday

Ben arrived on Hamilton Island yesterday to begin his new job

Ben Southall, the 34 year old charity fundraiser from Hampshire who netted the job as Hamilton island caretaker, yesterday had his first day in the office.

Ben, who picks up an A$150,000 salary for his 6 month appointment, posted his first blog from Hamilton Island today, in which he speaks of his new job as “most exciting role I’ve ever been employed for.”

Ben will spend his time reporting back to the world on the wonders of Hamilton Island, while living rent free in a luxury three-bedroom bungalow with his girlfriend.

So far Ben has endured endless rounds of press conferences and publicity, but he finally touched down on Hamilton Island yesterday amid a media frenzy.

“Our arrival at Hamilton Island was truly spectacular – talk about a fanfare from the assembled staff from the resort! It really felt as if we’d finally arrived in paradise; the flight over the reef, the view as we came into land and then this – a welcome which left me speechless.”

However, Ben has described his best moment to date as introducing his girlfriend to their new home.

“I loved the next part – introducing Bre to Blue Pearl – our new luxury villa for the next six months. Her jaw dropped as we descended the steps into our new luxury apartment. I gave her the guided tour introducing her to the three double rooms and of course the amazing, huge ice dispensing fridge, then ended it off with a dip in our enormous spa on the balcony which looks out over the Coral Sea. There will be plenty of evenings spent here I imagine.”

Hmmm. It’s a hard job, but someone’s got to do it I guess.

You can follow Ben’s progress here.
