Airship designs have come a long way from slow and cumbersome.
Do you dread the travel to Australia? All those hours sat on a cramped airplane and then the horrendous jet lag once you arrive, wouldn’t it be nice if you could make the journey part of the holiday?
Well in a bold new vision unveiled at the Tourism Futures conference in Brisbane this week, design expert Nick Talbot wants to do just that. They Sydney Morning Herald were there to hear about Mr Talbot’s plans to build an airship that could carry up to 100 passengers in the most luxurious of surroundings.
Mr Talbot turned to a British company to help him bring his design ideas to life, planning a huge airship with a modern new design for the 21st century. The Aircruise is a futuristic kite-shaped ship that can glide almost effortlessly up to 12,000 feet in the air. Think of a luxury cruise ship for the skies, make it into a vertical kite-shape and you’ll have the general idea.
Instead of just treating journeys as a way to get from A to B as fast as possible, the Australian designer has reversed the trend and made the journey slow and elegant, with passengers able to enjoy every second of it. From time to time the huge Airship will be able to drop down below the clouds to let guests enjoy the spectacular views – after all, there’s no hurry!
Mr Talbot said of his idea: “None us of know how to stop, but there is a slow move – hundreds of millions of people just want to slow down a bit and actually enjoy life,” he went on; “This is about accessing that [desire] to … actually enjoy the journey.”
Well there will be plenty to enjoy! The floating hotel will include a three-level cocktail bar with amazing views through the glass floor, 50 rooms that include a luxury penthouse suite as well as four high spec apartments.
And the environmentalists will be happy with the virtually untraceable carbon footprint. Hydrogen gas and solar panels will power the giant Aircruise.
But as yet this is all just a dream on paper only. Mr Talbot will be part of a workshop and ideas generator in Brisbane this Thursday with Tourism Australia. He is hoping that his idea will get people thinking about alternative travel solutions. So who knows, sometime in the future you could find yourself travelling to Australia in an entirely new and unique way!
