The mining tax has won Labour some support.
As the fight for power rages on in Australia, the independents let out the biggest hint yet about who may get their support.
The controversial mining tax, which the Labour Party had been under pressure to drop by the Australian market, actually gets support from three independents and the Green Party. The Liberal Party have said that they will drop the tax.
The news is a huge blow to Liberal leader Tony Abbott who is in Canberra trying to negotiate a deal with the independents. It already looks highly likely that the Green Party member will support Labour, so all Ms Gillard needs now is the backing of the independents.
The three independents have said that the economy is a major issue in the elections and have warned that if a deal cannot be made, then Australia could face fresh elections. “We do think this is about the economy and we do think the next three years needs some consideration of things such as election promises and election commitments, and both the costings and the impact on the budget and the economic cycle for the next three years.” Independent Rob Oakeshott stated.
Another independent Tony Windsor confirmed that if the parties refused to consider their demands then the situation could provoke another poll. So far the independents have made seven broad demands to Labour and the Liberal party.
The independents also support the rural community and want a $38 billion broadband network plan to go ahead, something that the Liberals have previously opposed. But then Liberal leader Tony Abbott has publicly said that he will be flexible. However he also publicly said that a politician sometimes cannot be trusted – so will he be able to win the trust of those who hold the balance of power in their hands?
