GMTV goes down under in search of Poms in Oz.

GMTV, ITV’s popular daytime magazine show, is running a whole week of features aimed at helping people emigrate to Australia.

Titled ‘Destination Down Under’ the series looks at how to obtain an Australian visa, plus gives advice on residency and Australian house prices.

It’s a move that will be welcomed by the Australian government as figures show a marked drop in the number of Britons immigrating to Australia, largely due to the recession. However with the Australian dollar still strong and a government keen to encourage skilled Britons to apply for visas, migrating to Australia could make financial sense in the long run.

Ben Shephard, the popular GMTV presenter, presents a live blog from Australia every morning. He arrived in Sydney on Friday 9th October and visited the main tourist attraction in Sydney, the world famous Sydney Harbour Bridge. After a sail down Sydney Harbour itself, Ben Shephard then interviewed two families who have immigrated to Australia to find out just what it’s like living down under. You can read about our very own Poms in Oz in our feature on Settling in Sydney.

On their website, GMTV also have city guides for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. In addition to this they have information and features on the Australian climate, Australian schools and Australian hotels. Have they been peeking at our site?

Natalie Jones, spokeswoman for GMTV said that the features had been done with families in mind: “People get to their thirties, they have families and they wonder if they can still do it, our show is aimed at that market and so we wanted to ask all the questions they would ask.”

More than 23,000 Brits emigrated to Australia between 2007 and 2008. In fact Australia remains the number one choice for Britons choosing to immigrate abroad. What’s more, 3 Britons every minute leave the UK to start a new life abroad. Natalie said that GMTV decided to do the series of features on this “popular phenomenon”, she said their aim was to “show what life is like out there and to show people that it’s possible for them.

You can catch ‘Destination Down Under’ on GMTV every day this week until Thursday, from 7.00-8.30am.
