Iceland’s Volcano Once Again Causes Travel Chaos

Planes at Dublin airport are grounded for now.

Just when airlines thought it was all over the Icelandic volcano that caused so much chaos within the travel industry last month is back, this time shutting airports in Ireland and south Wales.

International flights from and to Ireland are cancelled, including flights to Australia, whilst some domestic flights from Cardiff airport are also cancelled. Airspace over the Outer Hebrides has been closed as a fresh cloud of volcanic ash spreads from the North over Ireland.

People wishing to travel to Australia from any of the Irish airports should check with their airline before setting off for the airport. Those travelling back from Australia could also be affected.

The ash cloud caused major disruptions to air travel last month when airspace over the UK and parts of Europe were closed, grounding planes and stranding passengers. Many travellers are still struggling to return from holidays in Australia and the US.

Airspace was re-opened just two weeks ago after aviation authorities finally concluded that the amount of ash in the air posed no threat to air traffic. Airlines faced massive bills from passengers for expenses incurred whilst stranded and Ryanair was forced to back down after stating that it would only refund passengers up to the price they paid for their tickets.

It is hoped however that this time the shutdown of some UK airports will only be temporary, with the Irish Aviation Authority stating that airports could re-open again later today. They say the closure was necessary as the ash in the atmosphere exceeded the safe levels.

Air traffic passing over Ireland is not thought to be affected so the impact on Australian travel will be minimal, but those heading out of Ireland today will need to check with their airlines for any delays.
