Helper for Australia’s Best Job in the World Goes Missing

Hello? Has anyone seen my assistant?

Hello? Has anyone seen my assistant?

And the winner of the assistant to Ben Southall, the man with the best job in the world, goes…..missing!

Back in August, Tourism Queensland, buoyed by their success with the best job in the world campaign, thought up of an idea to keep the story interesting and entertaining. They would get Ben Southall a helper, someone who would help spice up the boring old Pom.

The duties for the helper were fairly simple, to follow Ben around the islands writing his blog for him – Ben was criticised during his first month of the job by fans of the competition for failing to write more than one blog a week.

Therefore a global competition was launched by Tourism Queensland, offering a seven week, all expenses paid holiday in Queensland for the winner and three of their friends. Sounds ideal doesn’t it? It certainly proved a popular concept, with over 23,000 entries from around 150 countries.

A young Californian woman was the successful applicant and at this stage you’d expect tears, joy, lots of press coverage and general delight all round. Herein lies the problem, she doesn’t appear to know or perhaps care much about her win, as organisers are failing to contact her. They’ve left emails, answerphone messages and tried every other way to contact the woman, but have so far drawn a blank.

Tourism Queensland said yesterday that if the winner did not respond by October 23, the competition would be re-drawn.

So it looks as though Ben Southall may have to carry on writing his own blogs for the time being. However despite the initial criticism that surrounded him, the best job in the world campaign has been hugely successful for Tourism Queensland and has been credited with a recent growth in the youth and backpacker market.
