Cricketing legend Matthew Hayden has called time on his international career, just days after being left out of the Twenty20 side to face South Africa.
Having scored 8,625 runs at an average of 50.72 across 103 Tests, the Aussie also quit the domestic game in an emotional press conference. At just 37, Hayden had enjoyed a glittering career and was hoping to face England in the Ashes Test this summer. Hayden said, “I have lived the dream and loved every minute of representing Australia and Queensland – there’s zero regrets when it comes to my cricket performance.â€? Some critics believe he has walked too soon.
While Hayden retires from the Aussie team, new boy David Warner justified being picked for the Australian side by scoring 89 runs off 43 balls, as Australia won their opening Twenty20 match against South Africa this weekend by 52 runs, posting 182-9 off their 20 overs. Overnight Australia took their lead to 2-0 in the series, winning by six wickets and scoring 161 to South Africa’s 157.
