Happy New Year!

The famous Sydney firework display.

It’s nearly the end of 2009 and time to start welcoming in 2010! And the best place to see in the new year? Need you ask? Australia of course!

As well as being one of the first people to see in the new year, you’ll get to experience all the thrills of being in one of the world’s hottest destinations.

Sydney’s famous New Year’s fireworks will be heralding in the new year in style and with a bang. One of the best places to be is on the Sydney Waterfront to join in the celebrations. If you’re quick there are still tickets left for the new year eve cruises on Sydney Harbour. Or how about getting a room with a view at the Bayview Boulevard?

Sydney has the second largest New Year celebrations after Rio de Janerio, attracting crowds of more than 1.5 million people. To put that into perspective, London crowds average between 800,000 and 1,000,000.

Over 80,000 fireworks are set off from the Sydney Habour Bridge and six other firing points along the harbour. And don’t worry that you might not be close enough to see the action, the spectacular display can be seen from around 16km away.

If Melbourne is more your scene then the places to go are in the heart of the city. Events are happening right along the Yarra river, the Docklands, Federation Square, Alexandra Gardens, Birrarung Marr, Southbank, Richmond, Waterfront City, New Quay, Port Melbourne, Albert Park Lake and St Kilda.

Live music and fireworks will be the order of the day (or night) and as the events get larger so do the crowds, up to one million people are expected. Although it’s not as busy as Sydney and feels less claustrophobic as the events are spread across the city. Another bonus is that many of the events will be completely FREE!

But wherever you choose to spend new years eve, we wish you a very happy and prosperous one. So let’s raise a glass and toast Australia and all who embrace her. Happy New Year everyone!
