Gaffe-Prone Prince Philip Does it Again!

Adam Hills, a successful Australian stand-up, was born without a right foot.

The Duke of Edinburgh has a habit of putting his foot in it, only this time his humour was directed towards a comic who was born without one.

Australian stand-up comic Adam Hills was performing in Blackpool at the Royal Variety Performance. Afterwards he lined up backstage alongside Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and Michael Bublé to meet the Queen and Prince Philip.

The Prince was asking Adam about his plans to return home to Australia for Christmas when he spotted the comic’s prosthetic limb. He then reportedly joked: “You could smuggle a bottle of gin out of the country in that artificial foot.”

Adam, who was born without his right foot, later told the Daily Mirror that he wasn’t at all offended and thought the gag was “brilliant” – he’ll no doubt be storing it away to use in his stand-up routine!

However the Prince’s quips haven’t always gone down so well. Only days before he was in the news again for insulting a blind serviceman. 15 year old army cadet Stephen Menary was blinded in an IRA bombing and met the Prince at a tree planting ceremony in Hyde Park, London. The Queen asked the young cadet how much sight he had left and before he could answer the Prince retorted: “Not a lot, judging by the tie he’s wearing.”

His remark was met with a stony silence from the cadet’s family and a glare from the Queen.

Prince Philip is no stranger to gaffes and has managed to offend a variety of people with his unique sense of humour. In 2002 he asked an Australian aborigine whether he was “still throwing spears”.

Still, it’s nice to know that even the Royal Family aren’t immune to the ‘embarrassing relative’ syndrome!
