Australian celebrities have gathered together to share their best experiences of holidays in Australia in an effort to promote Australia as a top holiday destination.
Titled Friends in Australia the campaign is a stunt pulled by Tourism Australia with the aim to get people talking about Australia and sharing their experiences of the country.
So far 80 celebrities have given video testimonials that are currently being uploaded onto Lens on Australia, they include Matt Moran the celebrity chef who shares his love of Hamilton Island for its peace and tranquillity and the variety and abundance of good food. Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton, fashion designers, enthuse about the remoteness of Australia that inspires creativity; Andy Ridley, the Executive Director of Earth Hour shares his love of Jarvis Bay as a getaway from the bustle of the city; Peter FitzSimons, Author and Presenter, loves Uluru especially at sunset when a “kaleidoscope of colours” can be seen and Axle Whitehead, Actor and Musician reminisces about his drive from Melbourne to Perth across the desert as an exhilerating experience.
All of the celebrities taking part have given their time freely to promote the virtues of Australia as a tourist destination as Tourism Australia recognise the importance of word of mouth in promoting Australia.
Andrew McEvoy, Managing Director of Tourism Australia, said of the Friends of Australia program: “These Friends get to share their Australian stories on video with testimonials about their secret holiday spots, favourite travel experiences and great adventures. These will be used to promote Australian travel to domestic and overseas audiences.”
Well it certainly beats using the native wildlife to promote Australia – Tourism Australia have now banned the use of wildlife in any of its tourism programs after the outcry over the treatment of a kangaroo on the streets of Los Angeles as part of Tourism Australia’s G’Day promotion. It must now hope that it can undo some of the damage done to its public image within the tourist industry.
We think that Friends of Australia is a great promotional piece for the country as it encourages people to talk about their favourite Australian experiences and as we all know, word of mouth is often the best form of promotion.
