Fly to Oz for a tenner

Mike Hawkins | Friday, July 3rd, 2009 at 4:31 pm

Brits with a valid Australian Working Holiday Visa are in with the chance of scoring a flight to Australia for just £10.

The amazing ‘£10 Pom’ offer is being made by STA travel, who have teamed up with Qantas to offer a total of 150 one-way tickets for the price of a round of drinks.

The tickets will go on sale at 8am on the 5 August at eight select STA branches.  It’s first come first served, so it may be wise to take a sleeping bag and be through the doors extra early to be in with a chance.

With current graduate job prospects looking bleak, taking a Gap Year is an attractive option to many. This year has seen a 21% increase in the number of Australian Working Holiday Visas granted.

John Constable of STA Travel says: “The £10 Pom is an opportunity for Brits to experience all that Australia has to offer from working at a vineyard in Margaret River to learning to surf on Bondi Beach. There’s never been a better time to escape the UK and head Down Under”

The ‘£10 Pom’ was the name originally given to emigrating Brits from 1947 t the 1960s, who took part in a subsidised migration scheme operated by the Australian government after World War Two. More than a million Brits took advantage of the offer to escape the glum post-war era and help build Australia.

Rodney Harrex of Tourism Australia adds “The original £10 Pom assisted passage scheme resulted in a British fascination with the faraway land of Oz that has endured ever since and today over 35,000 young Brits travel on a Working Holiday Programme every year to live the Aussie lifestyle for themselves. The visa offers them the opportunity to travel all over Australia for an extended period of time, giving them the freedom to supplement their travel funds with incidental work”

Five of the STA tickets will be drawn from people who pre-register online before the ticket sale.

The participating STA Travel branches are:

  • Belfast, 92/94 Botanic Avenue BT7 1JR
  • Birmingham High St, 222-224 Corporation Street B4 6QB
  • Bristol, 43 Queens Road BS8 1QQ
  • Glasgow, 122 George Street G1 1RF
  • Leeds, 88 Vicar Lane LS1 7JH
  • London Victoria, 52 Grosvenor Gardens SW1W 0AG
  • Manchester, Albert Square 86 Cross Street M2 4LA
  • Southampton, 6-8 Civic Road SO14 7FL
