Floods in Victoria

Robert Pearce | Sunday, November 28th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

storm_2Severe weather warnings have been issued for much of Victoria following heavy rain and flash floods in North Central, Northern Country, Central, West and South Gippsland, East Gippsland and the North East.

The flooding is the result of a series of storm clouds that have been passing over the region causing massive disruption to peoples travel plans. Melbourne airport was affected by one storm front that grounded all air traffic for an hour.

The State Emergency Service has urged residents to avoid driving through flood water and if possible to postpone travel plans altogether.

The SES in Melbourne received hundreds of calls for help during the worst of the flooding, “Most were for flash flooding in the northern suburbs Campbellfield, Craigieburn, Broadmeadows and Roxburgh Park,” Lachlan Quick of the SES said.

Severe weather warnings have been lifted for the area as the tropical storm type weather has shown signs of clearing.

There has been concern that the strong winds pushing the storm clouds through the state could bring more sightings of locusts in southern Victoria. “DPI has had many reports of them ‘blowing in’ to southern parts of Victoria,” said locust plague commissioner Gordon Berg.

Concerns have also been raised by Andrew Broad, the president of the Victorian Farmers Federation over the effects of the torrential rain and high humidity on the wheat harvest.
