Roger Federer can celebrate another grand slam victory.
Andy Murray played the game of his life, but it wasn’t enough and today saw Roger Federer walk away with the first grand slam title at the Australian Open ending with a final result of 6-3, 6-4, 7-6.
Perhaps Murray’s old knee affliction came back to haunt him as his performance simply lacked confidence and stride or was it just that Federer’s feared forehand got the better of Murray?
The Scottish champion Murray struggled through the first two sets, losing them both to Federer, from that loss Murray knew he faced an almighty battle to gain ground and although he fought gallantly, Murray’s nerves got the better of him and he missed a couple of easy groundstrokes, bowing his dead in an almost early defeat.
Murray’s stubborn resistance showed when he took the lead in the sixth game of the final set. The crowd whooped and cheered as Murray seemed to recover his form with a brilliant forehand win. The confident play was short-lived though as the next game resulted in a tie-break.
The last 18 minutes were the most tense but it was too soon over for Murray as Federer took the match point when Murray blasted his backhand into the net.
It was a sweet victory for Federer who just 2 days before had joked about beating Murray on the pitch: “I know he’d like to win the first for British tennis in… what is it? Like 150,000 years?” he joked. “The poor guy has had to go through those moments over and over again. He’s done tremendously. We match up well. I’m looking forward to the final.”
The Swiss has now won the Australian Open a total of four times, whilst Murray has only one grand slam to his name in 2008.
