You can experience the exhilaration of the cattle drive for yourself!
The Great Australian Outback Cattle Drive is set to return to South Australia in 2010, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the lives of Australia’s Outback cattle drovers.
In 2002, a series of events and festivities was organised to mark Australia’s ‘Year of the Outback’. A major highlight of the celebrations was the recreation of the legendary cattle drives, during which hundreds of cattle were herded 320 miles down the Birdsville Track.
Following the success of the 2002 event, the Great Australian Cattle Drive was held again, as a standalone event, in 2005 and 2007. The journeys were led by Australia’s most famous and experienced drovers and involved 500 head of cattle and 120 horses.
The 2010 programme is set to be the biggest yet, comprising six 4 night / 5 day droving itineraries that have been especially developed to recreate the romance and history of cattle droving:
Dawn of the Cattle Drive Friday 30 July – Tuesday 3 August
Drovers Crossing Wednesday 4 August – Sunday 8 August
Kidman Country Monday 9 August – Friday 13 August
Cattle Kings Sunday 15 August – Thursday 19 August
Cattle Drive Round Up Wednesday 25 August – Sunday 29 August
During the five-day experience, visitors will travel on horseback through diverse landscapes, droving herds of cattle around 15 kilometres each day. Get to know the drover and farrier teams and learn about this fascinating part of Australian culture.
The cost of the five-day Cattle Drive experience is £1,595 per person, including superior carpeted tent accommodation with all meals and soft drinks, horse riding, including saddle, safety equipment and helmet, and guided coach tours as an optional alternative to droving on days 3 and 4. Flights are not included.
The Great Cattle Drive 2010 can be booked via Cox & Kings. Please contact an Australia expert on 020 7873 5000 for more information.

One Response to “Experience the great Aussie Cattle Drive!”

I can provide my own saddle and am relatively handy with a horse – missed out on the opportunity to drove some years ago on a paid contract and would like to take part – how much and when – not afraid of work and not afraid of paying! Am flexible with the timeframe.
Let me know.
Cheers.
