England victorious as The Ashes are reclaimed.
England have finally done it! The Ashes are on their way home after England defeated the Aussies by 197 runs. Australia could not compete with the aggressive bowling shown by England and they were finally bowled out after tea to 348.
For weeks the nation has held its breath. It’s been a close run with the first and third runs closing at a draw and England struggling to stay ahead. It all rested on the fourth test result. England hardly dared to even entertain the notion of winning, Stephen Fry could have been twittering for the nation when he wrote: “That insecurity is still gnawing. What if Australia…Could they? Could they? Could they? No they couldn’t! The huge sigh of relief from England was quickly followed by elation as Fry twittered: “Woweeeeeeeeeee! … I’m so happy I could explode.
The joy on the faces of England’s cricket team was also evident as they reclaimed the Ashes that have been in Australia’s possession since 2006/2007. Andrew Strauss summed up the feeling for the whole team: “It’s a massive moment and I’m determined to enjoy it. At times I didn’t think we were going to get there but that makes it more special.
Andrew Flintoff can now bow out of Test cricket with pride after gaining the Ashes twice for England on home soil. But this triumph is definitely all down to team effort as England have, at times, struggled to stay on top.
Man of the Series was named as Stuart Broad who gained five for 37 in the first innings. He was quick to praise the efforts of the team, saying: “Everyone’s worked so hard throughout the series… It’s what you dream about. It lived up to all the dreams…Full credit to all the boys.
Australian captain Ricky Ponting must have been gutted to lose the Ashes at The Oval for the second time in four years, but his response seemed to blame the pitch, rather than his team: “It’s probably fair to say I’ve had a few disappointing times here. It’s not my favourite ground in the world. Never mind Ricky, better luck next time!
It’s a morale boosting result for England! After all, we’re experiencing the worst recession since the 80’s, high unemployment and a washout of a summer. Now it seems that finally, we have something worth celebrating!
