A Glimpse of Apocalyptic Australia

Australians woke up this morning to weather of almost apocalyptic proportions as large areas of Australia were brought to a standstill by freakish weather conditions.

Sydney became a red city as a huge dust cloud shrouded the city in an eerie orange hue. The Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge were almost invisible in the thick red dust that settled on Sydney’s most famous sights. The rising sun meant that the red dust cloud took on a strange, almost supernatural glow.

However the spectacular sight also presented the city with chaos as outgoing flights were cancelled at Sydney airport and incoming flights diverted to Brisbane or Melbourne who also experienced delays as a result. Emergency services were inundated with calls and workers struggled to get in to work as poor visibility made the roads hazardous.

The Bureau of Meteorology said of the storm that it was “one of the worst, if not the worst.” They also warned of similar storms within the next day or two.

Health warnings are also being issued as dust particles settle on the city, with many people being urged to stay indoors.

Extreme weather was also experienced in Adelaide which was lashed with heavy rains, resulting in localised flooding.

And residents in Melbourne were awakened by two tremors which shook the city. In parts of New South Wales, rain turned to hail stones as big as cricket balls, which pelted the city mercilessly. Flood warnings have now been issued in parts of NSW.

Queensland didn’t escape either, firefighters are battling blazes in the North where conditions are unseasonably dry.

As world leaders gather in the UN summit to discuss the effects of climate change on the planet, you can’t help but feel that in Australia today, they’ve had their own warnings of how things might turn out if changes are not made.
