Changes to australia visas will affect australian employers and migrant workers.
The Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship head to Cairns on the 7 and 8 of October to explain the changes made to Visa Subclass 457 (Employer Sponsored Workers).
The changes were implemented on the 14 September to protect the rights of overseas workers after the DIAC found that some workers were being exploited by unscrupulous Australian businesses.
What the changes mean to Australian employers and Australia visa holders will be fully explained and questions answered at the session in Cairns. Topics discussed will include the new Sponsorship Obligations that requires employers to pay market rates to their migrant workers. Employers have until January 2010 to adhere to the changes concerning wages and face a hefty fine of up to $33,000 if they don’t.
The Australian Tax Office has also been given powers to communicate with the DIAC and disclose employer information to make it easier for the DIAC to keep tabs on employers and ensure that the new obligations are being met.
A DIAC spokesman encouraged people affected the changes to attend the conference: “We encourage employers, visa holders and other stakeholders in the Cairns area to attend a seminar to gain an understanding of the changes, as well as ask questions about the reforms.
Proficiency in the English language is another requirement of the visa rules, with visa applicants required to demonstrate their fluency in the spoken word as well as a basic grasp of English reading and writing.
The sessions will be held at the Cairns Regional Council Building and will start at 6.30pm.
