Aussie Rules
Australian Rules football dates back to 1858 and is the most popular sport in Australia and is akin to Gaelic football. It boasts the forth highest average attendances (38,295) in the world for the 2008 AFL (the Aussie rules equivalent of the British football ‘Premiership’) season. Considered a ‘winter sport’ and termed simply as ‘football’ or ‘footy’ by Australians, it has been played in all territories since 1915.
Most prevalent in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania, it has an increasing amount of indigenous Australian participation with 72 players in the top flight as at 2008. Notable Aussie rules clubs include current champions The Hawthorn Hawks, Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Geelong and recently the Brisbane Lions, West Coast Eagles and Port Adelaide.
