Rugby League

Both codes of rugby are widely played in Australia with rugby league being the more popular code. Introduced in 1908 ‘league’ hailed from Northern England and as in ‘the motherland’ it has traditionally been seen as a ‘working mans’ game.

It is the dominant winter sport of New South Wales and Queensland, and has a fiercely competitive top league called the NRL but in common with other major sports in Australia it has a strong and effective ‘grass roots’ structure. For information on the league and its teams visit the National Rugby League.

The national side nicknamed ‘The Kangaroos’ have been the dominant force on the world stage throughout the history of the game, winning 8 out of the 12 world cups that have been held, together with 5 out of the 8 Tri Nations competitions against fierce rivals New Zealand and Great Britain.

Such is their superiority that the 32-20 reverse at the hands of New Zealand in 2008 was a shock to the game. To learn more about the national side visit the Australian Rugby League site.
