Sophie survived for 4 months on a remote island
Sophie, a pet dog who was believed to have drowned after falling overboard in rough seas has been reunited with her owners after surviving on a remote island for four months.
Jan Griffith and her family were left devastated after believing Sophie had drowned in choppy waters off the coast of Queensland last September.
However, the dog managed to swim five miles through stormy seas until she reached St Bees Island, near the Great Barrier Reef, where she survived by hunting feral goats.
Sophie had been spotted in poor condition on the island by rangers, and Ms Griffith contacted them after discovering that a wild dog had been found on the largely uninhabited island.
Sophie immediately recognised her family when they were reunited.
“We called the dog and she started whimpering and banging the cage and they let her out and she just about flattened us,” Ms Griffith said. “She wriggled around like a mad thing.”
“She surprised us all. She was a house dog and look what she’s done, she’s swum over five nautical miles, she’s managed to live off the land all on her own.”
