Brits Opt For Working Holiday in Australia

Working holidays in Australia are becoming popular with Brits.

Working holidays in Australia are becoming popular with Brits.

Taking a working holiday in Australia is becoming ever more popular amongst young people and students, especially in the uncertain employment climate in the UK.

The Australian Department of Immigration report that more and more people are applying for Australian working holiday visas, in 2007-08 this figure was 154,148, a steady increase from the previous years. In fact these visas make up 27% of all temporary visas granted.

Australia have long realised the potential for temporary migrants to be part of the workforce. They provide short-term casual labour to industries such as hospitality and agricultural and livestock industries. With this in mind and as Australia becomes a popular holiday destination, the total number of working holiday visas granted by the DIAC have doubled in the last eight years. The DIAC have also been working hard to simplify the process and make working holiday visas more flexible and therefore more attractive to students and backpackers.

The length of time that a temporary worker can stay with one employer has been raised from 3 months to 6 months. Workers can now also study in Australia for up to 4 months and some visa holders are entitled to apply for a second working holiday visa to extend their stay.

It’s of little surprise that the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveal that the main country of source is the UK which, in 2007-08 made up 22% of the total number of visas granted. However Australia is becoming popular in other countries too as applications from Korea, Germany and France also increase.

If you are due to leave college or University this summer and are wondering what to do with yourselves, then this may just be what the career adviser ordered. Not only do you have a holiday of a lifetime in Australia, but you also pick up useful skills and experience to throw on your CV. And who knows, you may fall in love with life Down Under as many people do and decide that you’d like to move to Australia permanently!

Many students in Australia are choosing work in their vacation and even while they are studying because many hotels and companies are hiring part time jobs, specially on Christmas season.
