Joe Senior celebrates with his brother Doug.
A British man has won the incredible competition to travel around Australia by taxi!
Joe Senior, 57, entered a competition set up by the Western Australia tourism board to encourage people to visit Western Australia. The competition asked entrants to explain in 40 words or less why they should be part of the Extraordinary Taxi Ride. Mr Senior, who lost his sight at the age of six, won with his submission: “So I can feel and hear the power of nature; I am totally blind. My brother can see it. You have to be in it to appreciate it. Feel the surroundings and hear nature.”
The 57 year old retired IT worker will be taking his brother Doug who will describe some of the fantastic sights that Western Australia has to offer, from Perth to the very depths of the Australian outback, passing by forests and beaches, Ningaloo Reef, the coast and the Gibb River Road to name but a few of the spectacular sights the passengers will be able to experience.
He also stated that the trip would give him a better understanding of Western Australia in a way that would bring the region to life for him; “People with sight can see the world through TV and such visual aids. We, without sight can only appreciate the world through our ears or fingers.”
There are 11 pairs of winners in total, each of the winners will be taken on a different leg of the journey around Western Australia guided by a man who has been hailed as the region’s most knowledgeable taxi driver, Doug Slater.
Doug was born and bred in Bunbury and was chosen to represent his home state as the cream of the crop of taxi drivers.
