Brits are choosing boomerang breaks to Australia.
A recent poll suggests that more British youngsters are now considering emigrating to countries like Australia for the opportunities it presents.
Aviva UK Health polled 1,500 young people aged between 18-30 and found that 54% of them are considering migrating abroad for work reasons, but on a short-term basis only. Most of them would return within three years, prompting the phrase of “boomerang Brits” referring to the trend of moving away and then returning.
The poll found that among the countries Brits would migrate to, Australia remains the firm favourite. Australia has always been popular amongst backpackers who work on a temporary Australian visa which allows them to stay for up to a year in Australia working their way around the country. Temporary work is also readily available in Australia for migrating workers especially in the agricultural industry.
The UK recession is thought to be behind the interest in these working holidays abroad. The poll discovered that 43% of those questioned thought that a year working in countries such as Australia would be long enough to ride out the gloom of the UK recession. 20% would consider working for up to three years and 25% would seriously consider emigrating.
This exodus from the UK is hardly surprising given the unemployment rate in Britain at the moment is 7.8% compared to Australia’s 5.3%. Australia is one of the few world countries that managed to escape the recession and in fact some parts of Australia, such as the West, are currently experiencing a boom in the mining industry.
